Mom made SOS occasionally.
She added peas to it. Economical dinner for family of 7.
I had turtle soup a couple of times ages ago, always with an aunt who insisted I order it. She thought it was fancy. It was tasty but nothing I miss eating.

Army brat here ... our family had SOS a few times a month, usually when getting close to payday. Another meal we always saw close to payday was potato soup. Not your fancy vichyssoise but the cheap 4 ingredient potato soup, potatoes, onions, butter and whole milk.

The upper class loved turtle soup for some reason, and it was always served on luxury cruise liners.

Grew up eating S.O.S. on a regular basis. It's been a good few years since I've made it, mostly because I rarely buy milk.

The recipe I know softens the beef in butter before adding the flour and milk (not softening it in the white sauce).

I've never had the others.

Zero for me. Never heard of vinegar pie.

Turtle soup and creamed chipped beef on toast — both when I was very young. The soup would happen when the neighbors caught enough snapping turtles in their pond to make soup that they would share. No glass of sherry on the side as I recall
