my life partner Alan passed away. I hope he has found the peace he deserves.

I took this photo at the Dallas Arboretum a year or so before his passing. His mother chose it for his memorial service. I remember that day vividly. My co-worker (employee really) José sat with me. I was determined to keep it together. Then Alan's lifelong friend Doreen took the floor and began speaking of their friendship. And the tears began to flow. And I remember José, an obvious straight dude, put his arm around me and held me tight. I'll never forget that gesture. There is empathy in this world.
Later Alan's friends wanted to go for lunch at his favorite Chinese restaurant. It was awkward for many reasons but they all treated me very well. All I wanted to do was go home and hide. Forever. But in the end I didn't. So much has happened since but one thing never did. I never "moved on." Despite numerous chances (suitors) I never let anyone else into my life in that way. And I never will.
