Nothing great. They would often come out and swim around late in the day. With my cell phone I only had access to digital zoom.

Not sure. Didn't happen very often. More often I would just hear one heading away.

I played with the moon and reflection in Photoshop. This is the kind of giant moon effect you can only capture with a strong telephoto and I was using my phone. I titled it Enhanced almost full moon... to be transparent. I see a lot of pics like this online and I wanted to try my own version.

In case you didn't notice, they tore down that beautiful grove of very old pines near the New Road entrance and replaced them with yet more dorms. Of course, when they bought that land they swore they wouldn't.

I would be happy to meet my Spoutible friends in person. It would not be easy to coordinate. Spotty cell service and not really being able to predict exactly you might reach an given place. I would have a rough idea a few days before and not really have an exact ETA until just a few hours away.

As a lifelong New Englander, I feel your pain. After snow this late in the season, the pendulum always seems to swing the other way relatively quickly. Hope to see great new hiking pics from you soon.

Took my exposure from the sky, so reality was a little brighter and less saturated, but not so far off. The rare occasions when the sky is mostly cloudy but a sunset or sunrise somehow breaks through are always the most spectacular.

4,000 ft elevation gain in a day is a big day for most 20-year-olds, especially if they're not doing it on a screen. Way to go.

The AT follows the NC/Tenn state line west of Ashville for many miles. I'm still not 100% sure I'll be ready for 2025. My fallback is 2026. I would love to meet any of my fellow Spouties, but planning such a meet-up would be tough. I'll be on foot with spotty service in the mountains. Could be done.

I have done it before. I was 24 and in terrible shape at the start. One of the reasons I quit my dead end job and was on the AT a couple of weeks later. Not going to try that now.

I did the cross-country thing after my hike, too. Bus, rental car and walking for me. And your dad was smart to get his adventures in while he could enjoy them. I feel like I have at least one more in me.

It rained the day before, poured all night and all of this morning. Obviously was still raining in the Smokies. The next 2 days were nice, and then it poured for 3-4 days.
