Yeah, it took me a few viewings of their spelling to catch it. Just to spite my British friends I "correct" their pronunciation from time to time. (When we're joking about how each other pronounces things.)

Fun fact, they also spell it differently. Aluminium where as we spell it Aluminum. (Note the lack of the second "i"). So, given their spelling their pronunciation makes sense.

Also, reductivism, and bad faith reframing, when people raise very valid concerns, echoing those of a community you profess to be an ally of is bad faith behavior.

Bad faith behavior undermines trust.

A community that doesn't trust a new site won't adopt a new site.

Also, trivializing concerns as "just complaining" is as bad as ridicule. If you do that you're behaving as badly as ridiculing.

In both cases you're not listening, you're not communicating, you're not addressing concerns.

Failure on those fronts kills sites.

And when they have problems articulating their questions, engaging them in a genuine and open manner listening to their concerns, even if it changes nothing about a policy/implementation gains trust and understanding.

Ridicule does not.

Likewise. Tho I voted for it. Moderation is messy. (I tried my hand at it on Stackoverflow, and a couple of usenet forums back in college... I didn't last long.) And with sites like this it involves laws spanning many nations. That makes it messier.

On Twitter I've seen such accounts, after a great deal of disingenuous activity, get flagged as disruptive. So, I'm hoping for that to happen here as well.

Your framing of some of the responses to the request for clarity is, if nothing, a very polite one. I share your concerns. I fear that left-leaning (appearing?) bad actors have come to roost here. I hope the BotSentinel algorithm helps weed them out.

Yeah. From today's hot topic of discourse it would seem the usual social media rules still apply. (Mostly) Same people different site.

Mine are:
- Don't engage with dishonest framings (even if you agree with the conclusion)
- block early and often.
- precautionarily lock threads

Oh, and when publicly weighing in with my opinions on a controversy, I'll make it so that nobody I've not tagged can reply. That'll keep the nonsense to a minimum.

Use those techniques if you find them useful. I know I do.

So I guess I'll do like I do elsewhere... largely don't engage in conversations with people who do dishonest framings. Block early and often.

A variation of "Mute" I'd like to see is they're put into "read only" mode. They can't reply drumming up drama on your posts. I've had that happen on the other site. The resolution then is blocking, but that prevents learning as they no longer see stuff. I don't like learning loss.

I've really enjoyed Andor recently. And I loved the movies (except 1-3, they were "meh" for me.) Does that make me a fan? (And I don't really keep up on all of it. I'll probably start the Mandalorian in the not too distant future.)

The reason I say that is looking at the history with Tumblr this response was all but preordained. I'm sure there are other elements in the TOS that will eventually meet the ire of others that have yet to.

Having a thoughtful initial response helps the process.

I voted FOR it without thinking through the complexities and staff needed to pull it off. I think his most recent spout explaining (bullet point level) what the driving concerns were was spot on.

I hope folks give it a rest. And I hope Chris and team better prepare responses in advance here on.

Before people had heard of machine learning I was studying it a bit in college (early 1990s). I can imagine that was a kind of similar sort of conversation. But at least they knew WHAT a computer was.

And given the history of thes rules being used to demonizing trans folks and drag performances, classifying them as sex work/adult content, I totally understand. I hope Spoutible figures out how to better navigate this. But systems and policies change slowly.

Nice! That's such a cool history!

I only started into hardware related stuff about 8-10 years ago. Haven't really stuck with it much. I'm not that good at it. But it did help land me a job writing PC software to configure smart devices for a big name in industrial devices.

It took less than a month for the bog standard social media discourse to find its way here. Since most of my TL isn't that I'll be staying. But people will see no reason to join this site if it's essentially Twitter lite. (No literal nazis but lots of bullying if you disagree with the majority.)

I don't want my concerns to be a signal that I'm anti-sex work. I'm not. I do have concerns about current capacity of the current staff were they to try to be more lenient. It's a tough balancing act. I think, in the long run openness should win out, tho.

I ask because if people are going to be allowed to disagree, we should know how to not run afoul of the rules in the process. And getting support for an idea that an owner doesn't personally like isn't necessarily platform manipulation. Clear actionable rules help people abide by TOS in that process
