On this day in 1877, Sitting Bull and 5,000 Sioux enter Canada seeking refuge following the Battle of Little Big Horn.
The Canadian government refused to give them a reserve and starved the Sioux into returning to the United States in 1881.

On this day in 1950, Black Friday occurred in Winnipeg when flood waters rose nine metres, inundating the city.
The largest flood since 1826, it led to the evacuation of 70,000 to 100,000 people.
After the flood, the Red River Floodway was built from 1962 to 1968.

On this day in 1915, John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields. The day before, he performed the burial service of his friend, Alexis Helmer, and noticed how poppies grew around the graves.
The poem was published in the magazine Punch on Dec. 8, 1915.

On this day in 1919, Prince Edward Island extends the vote to most women on the island (Indigenous & Asian women were excluded).
Women originally lost the right to vote in PEI in 1836.
PEI is the last province to give the vote to women until Quebec does in 1940.

This Act was a major step towards Universal Healthcare in Canada.
It reimbursed provinces 50% the costs of hospital costs under provincial insurance programs.

In 1844, some women had voted in the Province of Canada election.
A losing candidate called women voting election fraud, leading to a parliamentary investigation & the ban.

Last night, Edmonton lost the historic Hangar 11 due to fire.

So, let's learn a bit about this history.

Hangar 11 was built by the US Army in November 1942. The building was built so quickly there were no design plans prior.
