I never referred to this particular interaction as a dog pile. But I’ve seen others crucified for not claiming this is the best social network to ever grace the Earth. Sorry, I watched it grow and am now watching it decline.

You will get criticized. And those criticisms will not always be phrased in the most polite or even (seemingly) useful manner. They rarely are.

When they stop criticizing you, it's because they've stopped talking about you entirely.

A baby or pet tells you things all the time. They don't speak your language, but you can usually pick up on what they want with some minor interaction. [This isn't to infantilize users, it's a matter of this not being a shared responsibility.]

All criticism is constructive. The consumer is trying to tell you something but they don't speak your language, whether it's artist, UI designer, programmer, PR, whatever. It's your responsibility to translate that into the language you understand and either act upon it or not.

Agreed. Scale makes a huge difference. But minor tweaks like consolidating multiple likes for a spout to a single notification (30 people liked this spout) or notifications about echoes being engaged with will go a long way. To me. The only person I speak for.

Twitter lets you know when your retweets are engaged with, plus many other differences that FEEL more engaging. Again, this is your thing and you can run it any way you want and I don't have the expertise to quantify the feelings. But yes, Twitter felt far more engaging. I don't know why.

You're the expert, man. This is your purview. I guess you're right: I love it here and it's great. Very satisfying. Thanks for listening to my feedback and setting me straight. Good luck!

I a lot of ways, it feels more like a chat room or old-school BBS bulletin board. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but - to me - feels outdated. This isn't a request to be more like Twitter, which seems to be what the binary-thinking replies are intimating.

Short-term engagement is not a problem, it's fleeting. I deleted Twitter (same handle) after 14 years b/c I'd like to be all-in here. But whereas other networks feel like I am getting more than I put in, this seems opposite. Diminishing returns? I don't have the expertise to quantify these things.

Honest feedback isn't easy when every criticism gets dog piled by your fans. Engagement isn't great here compared to some other platforms and I'm putting a lot into it. Spouts get bounced around like a beach ball at a festival for a while, then disappear forever. Hard to build long term engagement.
