My favorite book when I was seven or so was Big Tree by Mary and Conrad Buff, perhaps based on the Wawona Tunnel Tree in Yosemite National Park which fell during a winter storm in 1969. “A giant five-thousand-year-old Sequoia, called Wa-No-Na by the Indians, tells its life story, from the time before recorded history when it was a little seed until comparatively recently when, over three hundred feet tall and having survived the varied attacks of enemies through twenty-five centuries, it comes near to falling prey to the most dangerous enemy of all—man.” (Google Books)
