You would wait for a page to load, and someone would pick up the other phone, start dialing, and sever the connection. Or if you had call-waiting and forgot to deactivate it, someone calling you would cause a disconnect. 😭

I was there for the dawn of the internet, the struggle for control of the single phone line was real and bloody 🫨 😆 🤣 😂

This is me as a lab monitor at CalArts in the late 80s. You know what we didn’t have in the lab? Internet. Internet was the thing we used to dream about that was one day going to revolutionize our world. Until then we had floppy discs. 😂

I worked as a graphic artist at a print shop in the 90s and it would take FOREVER to download one stupid logo from someone’s ftp server.

I’m older then that. My first experience with the internet was in a small rural school in Northern MN in 1975. We would stay after school to play Oregon Trail using MECC . We would dial the number, put the phone in the modem coupler and play for hours. Typing bang to shoot our food

The cost for internet access was insane too.

I remember having to pay $1 per MINUTE back in '95, plus, our small town didn't have an ISP, so we had LONG DISTANCE charges added to that. I still remember a $3k internet bill one month😬

Someone else commented about 9600 baud & I was snickering. Try doing daily updates to a bbs at 300. Oh, the joy. 😂

I remember getting yelled at by my dad because I dialed in to a long-distance number to connect to the Internet once. My parents had already put in a second line for the Internet because they hated having the phone line tied up when my siblings might need rides home from school activities.
