I don't expect everyone to get along, and that is why we have block and mute buttons. It will be harder to get people to come here and stay if they feel unwelcome.

Yea, I don't get it, you have options. You won't like or agree with everyone. Mute, block, don't follow people you don't like, and move on with life.

Honestly, 97% of the time if I see someone spouting something I seriously disagree with or don't care for I block. I don't engage, most want it too much. Now if they come at you directly, it's different. But blocking is all around the best idea.

There is room for everything on Spoutible, but when people deliberately gang up on someone, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Personally, I like the mute and block features. In the end Spoutible still need content creators to survive.

The order of those aspects/options is just about backwards: Some users don't want certain others to come and so make that clear (in apparent hopes of getting them to leave). Those that stay will get muted--or if they first engage, blocked (and misrepresented in order to self-justify it and pile-on).

It will be an ongoing challenge for monitoring (as I've previously noted).

Have you considered employing some moderators? My 1st ever spout was attacked for days! Mainly by condescending men I didn’t even know nor follow. All because I said I was not feeling certain stuff about this app, just coming off Twitter as I was.

Moderators are a pox. Just look at Reddit. It's even more toxic than pre-musk Twitter. And the greatest toxicity comes from self-important moderators when you ask why they turned their capricious moderation on you.

Misogyny is the crux of most of the issues I've seen on here. Men being condescending asshats. Men wanting to be in control. Men not admitting a woman is right. Men needing the last word. For me to feel safe, I need to be able to call them out on it, even the ones with "fans," or it will propagate.

What I've observed is it seems to be getting worse, which does not bode well. Misogynist men dominate nearly every online social media site. If Spoutible is to be different, it will have to deal with it, or this site will become just another misogynist hell hole & women will leave.

I'm wondering what the mechanism for calling someone out would look like. It seems there might be several ways of doing it, but each of them has inconsistencies. For example: is it about two individuals, or about a person displaying a generalised behavior that warrants response from a group? ...1/n

I like it here. It would be nice if I could share spouts with my 'elder' friends through email or Instagram, though.

I find hiding echoes also helps with the signal to noise ratio.

There already ia a "core" group of people that do not welcome critiques or alternative viewpoints and do so by piling on rather than listening/critical thinking.
Also some of the most deep thinkers are marginalized or banned (e.g. sex workers/advocates).
This is supposed to be sm, not nextdoor.

sex workers are banned?

I don’t think anyone is banned by profession. I think it’s about the content of their posts.

People can talk about nearly anything but posting pictures/video is a different story. no?

I agree that there's some cliqueness (and also understandable defensiveness).

However, sex workers are not banned on Spoutible. People who post porn are. But you can absolutely be a sex worker and post here, as long as you don't try to make Spoutible your workplace.

So what you’re saying is there’s an actual adult in charge of this platform. I almost forgot what that feels like.

A lot of times it's not only easier, but more fun to just argue with them. Unless they come in groups. Then block.
