Does anyone else start feeling melancholy in the days leading up to your birthday? I don't know why that is...it's not about age (although when I think about where age ultimately leads I feel bad in a different way...)

Not any longer. I've come to view it as my personal New Years Day over the past decade or so.

Hmmmm… I have found for me it depends on the year. And some years I can be quite euphoric. Some years I feel more sad in the days after my birthday.

Yeah, I think it depends for me too. There's not much going on this year, so maybe that's what's making me feel more blue...

I don’t like being the center of attention- it makes my anxiety go out of control so I do get anxious on my Birthday. Also, my mother passed away on my Birthday 14 years ago which makes it hard for me. I didn’t even celebrate for a few years after. Now I have very subdued birthday-I am ok with that.

Yes. Not because I'm getting older; I don't care about that. A past relationship began during my birthday month long ago, with the first date taking place on my actual birthday, so there is usually some sadness for me around that time. 🤷‍♀️

No. I actually get excited. It's my day. I'm also grateful because lots of people don't make it that far in life.

personally, this topic has become freshly fraught for me.
the anonymous hack orchestrating the narrative structure of my life staked a couple of glaring pylons, in retrospect, on the last two birthdays ending in 0, and they’ve started to bear highly toxic dividends on successive years.

I do know what you mean. It's like, a reckoning? It's been another year, have I been enough, done enough?

Wait, when is your birthday? (If you don't mind sharing)

Not me. I’m usually happy and amazed at how I feel as I turn another year older — except this year. I’m pissed because my birthday is soon and I realized a few weeks ago that I’ve been thinking I was already that age for the whole past year. I’ve missed an entire year! I gotta pay better attention

I’ve had the problem of becoming confused about my age for a few years now. Every year after 50 has seemed the same.

Not me, not thus far. I get excited af. I think after so many years of long suffering stuff, focusing on that one day a year being all about me has been healing and also fun.

That's awesome. Paradoxically, I get that as well, and usually by the time my birthday hits I'm excited again. Honestly I think it just comes down to wanting to have an exciting & special day/year/life but just a nagging feeling that nobody cares (although I know they do!)

I also feel melancholy as I approach my birthday lately. I’ve always been proud of whatever age I was and proudly state it whenever anyone asks. But I’ve realized the last couple of years the majority of the years that I will live are now behind me. Makes one very reflective.

Yes… have for probably last 30 years that I recall & my daughter does as well. I notice sometimes kids at work struggle with it too. Not sure what else to say other than it’s a thing & the struggle is real ❤️🌀
