My first spout has to be education related, so here's a piece I wrote recently on the wave of book bans.

Some of what's discussed here--a post-pandemic return to buying more stuff and the crappiness and disposability of that stuff, the dissatisfaction that comes with hyperconsumerism--is likely affecting consumer sentiment and making its way into polls about the economy. #giftedarticle

In response to Anne Lutz Fernandez.
Makes me think of an interview I saw where a female Trump voter was angry because "He's hurting the wrong people." She got swept up in one of his shitty policies, and she was angry about it. Maybe they hope Noem will hurt all the right people.

Exactly. Reminiscent of Bill Barr’s audition memo before becoming AG

Noem’s dog story did just what it was supposed to do: get everyone talking about her book. But I fear it’s more insidious— a “the cruelty is the point” move meant to show she’s ready to be brutal to anyone the far right deems nonhuman.

I found the first line of that quote interesting (repro'd in full below).

I just recently learned that women diagnosed with cancer are warned by health care providers not to rely solely or largely on a male partner for support and care because they're 6x more likely to leave after the diagnosis.
Anne Lutz Fernandez @lutzfernandez
One thing it doesn't do is discuss differences by gender. This quote suggests the answer to happiness is not marriage but getting a wife.

Exactly - in fact studies have shown that men married to women live longer and happier, but women married to men live less long and less happily than their single counterparts.

‘The deeper question is why the trinity of happiness is so stratified by income—and whether well-being in America is in danger of becoming a luxury good.’

Certainly seems like it’s heading that way
Anne Lutz Fernandez @lutzfernandez
Worth a read. It challenges the idea that marriage is a silver bullet, as so many male pundits keep chiding us. It also challenges the "money can't buy you happiness" myth that helps the rich keep more of their riches. #giftedarticle

This article "You are the fuel that energises Elon Musk’s hate machine" is a must read, particularly the last section titled "The bar that was built around its drinkers" which cites the problem of why people continue to use/support X: “I hang out at the Nazi bar because all my friends are there”.
Anne Lutz Fernandez @lutzfernandez
I stopped posting at X many moons ago but went private and kept my account, holding onto the fantasy that Musk may end up having to sell and the site be saved. Went back today to post this.

I'd layer on this that as the wealthy have become able to pay for medical care for their pets that many don't have access to for their kids, the emotional culture has also been altered, so that if you don't or can't treat your pet like a human, you are made to feel guilt and shame. #giftedarticle

"It was a sobering experience, even with a Court that has shown a propensity to abandon first principles, precedent, history, common sense, and the good of the American people when their political allegiances demand it. The outcome of the case is far from certain. The argument was disheartening."

After reading this piece about the venture capital takeover of the ACT test, I can't shake the image of Tippi Hedron outside the one-room schoolhouse oblivious to the birds alighting one by one on the playground equipment behind her.

As with other "shortages," the shortage is in pay, not the number of people willing to do the job if it paid decently.

Wildfires are an increasing and dramatic threat to our homeland. Surely there is a rounding error in the defense budget that could be used to recruit and retain firefighters.
