Ladies! Did you know that in 1973 you wouldn't have been able to get a credit card or bank account without your husband's signature? And it would be years after the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed in 1974 before many banks would abide by the new law.

My 1st new car in 1973 had to be in my father’s name even though I made all the payments on it.
My brother-in-law was instrumental in getting me my first credit card in 1973. I believe he either co-signed or I was an authorized user on his card.
I retired in 2021 making more money than he ever did.

Absolutely ridiculous. I'm so glad we've made progress. We must keep it.

Graduated college in 1975, moved to a new city in 1977, and was still told I needed a male relative to co-sign to rent furniture for my crappy studio apartment. Fun times - and let's keep them in the rearview!

I needed a male to sign for my car. Full time job, living in an apartment. Out on my own.

And I remember what it was like before Title IX was passed in 1972.

Title IX - prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

The following added later - (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity)

Yes, my Mom was one of them and we lived thru it. My Dad had to sign for our mortgage even though she made more money than him. I was in college when she finally could get credit cards in her name. Mom was an active LWV member, passed on her sense of women’s rights to her daughters. RIP Mom 💕

I don't just know - I lived it after I was divorced in 1975. It was still a "man's world." Boy, they had a lot to learn. Today many women are the main wage earner.

I was fired from my job 3 days before I gave birth to my son in 1980. And I had vacation time to cover my time off.

What’s interesting to me is that my mom did have charge cards way before the ‘70s from —-department stores—Wanamaker’s, Gimbles, Lit Brothers. I’m guessing department stores depended on women spending dollars in their stores. Funny how self-interest can bend the rules.

Guessing they granted the credit thru your father (his name is on the card). My mom had those too, only got them in her name after the laws changed. 🙂

I distinctly remember my Mom's joy when she received her first charge card, which she referred to as a 'charge plate'.

My dad came with me at 12 to get my accounts set up. His sister had never married and he saw the bs she had to put up with. I had 140 dollars from babysitting and I put 70 dollars in a savings account and 70 in a checking account. I don't think I understood the impact until the last 20 years.

Yes, and I am one of the women that fought for your right to do so! I raised hell trying to get and finally obtaining my own first card in 1975. I’ve worked hard over the years to maintain an excellent rating, too. When you get credit cards you must be diligent in smartly using them!
