For the longest time I thought "awry" was pronounced "aw-ree". Fortunately I never had to say it out loud.

I used to pronounce aspartame the way epitome is pronounced.
To be honest, epiTOME is a much cooler sounding word. "I must consult the epitome to discover how to tame the dreaded Aspar."

I have a memory of people pronouncing it "as-par-ta-mee" when it first came out. It's only within the last 5 years or so that I've heard "as-par-tame".
But it was a long time ago, maybe I imagined it. :P

Frangipani... and it was a very public mistake, too. I was so embarrassed that I've blocked out the correct way to say it. I usually just go with "Plumeria" or "pretty Hawaiian flower" now.

You shouldn't be embarrassed, it's not an everyday word! :)
The people who SHOULD be embarrassed are in the town where my SIL used to live, who would order "FA-jih-tas" at the Mexican restaurant. 😁

Lichen. I always thought it rhymed with kitchen. When I heard it pronounced "like-in" it sounded wrong. Still does!

Awe. I somehow knew the correct and same meanings for awe when I heard it and ah-way when I read it. I was helping a friend practice her lines for a play in 9th grade. My ah-way totally broke the flow.

Epitome, misled (myzled), macabre (mac-a-ber) , etc. Reading well ahead of grade level will do that, I guess.

People who mispronounce words are people who read, who learn words from reading. It's a positive thing!

My sister and I had the same mishap as young readers and laugh about it to this day. If you learned to read (English) phonetically, non English words always tripped us up. Didn't know it as kids, though. And we came across that word in a comic book! 😁✨📖💙🐳

Kiev. When I first read it, I thought it was pronounced Ki ev, later heard it pronounced Key ev in movies. Wasn't until Russia attacked them 3 years ago that I leaned it was pronounced Keeve by the people who actually lived there so I've course corrected 3 times on that word.

Just realized I spelled the word the way I first thought it was pronounced and didn't catch it (thanks covid) until well past the edit window, just to clarify I was talking about Kyiv.
