No, you’re right about all of that. The original meaning is interior states, but there is also the implication that there is no reason to stop there. I meant it as a joke, but when overseas I often have to explain that Oregon is between CA and WA. 😂😭

Oh wow, that Great Dividing Range is huge!

It sounds very similar. The PNW is also called Cascadia, referring to the Cascade Range that stretches from northern CA to BC and plays a similar role in dividing socioeconomic status and political ideology in general.

I consider the PNW to be WA and OR, but it's not an official designation. Others want to include Northern CA (okay, maybe the northernmost part), British Columbia (sure), and Alaska (hmm, it is on the Pacific but...). Still others want to include inland states like Idaho (no).

I've actually never seen these, @strawberigrl12 , but I will now keep my eyes out for them.

That's good to hear. I hope this doesn't become the new normal. They're even suggesting the remnants of Hilary could reach eastern OR.

Ooh, your own personal star-viewing guide. Nice. He probably has a telescope, too? I think I need one because my eyes don't see as well as they used to...

We use an astronomy app on our phone to check the constellations. 🤓 Kind of defeats the purpose of getting away from light pollution, though 😄

Bite-size donuts? I think they used a similar measuring spoon to form the donuts themselves. Wow. Well, at least you got a couple dozen.

Hope you are safe and dry down there, Minnie.

This was a lot of fun. Thanks Ramsey and Hector for doing all the work.

And I'm very happy for Spain, whom I did not pick (what was I thinking?!). They played exceptionally well all tournament and are deserving champions.

Freshwater, but pretty small. Do you have to, like, watch out for the yabbies when you're swimming in a lake/stream?

Yes, salmon and steelhead fishing is very popular here. You have a lot of salmon, as well?

Ha! Well, Montana has all of the above, but this was a grizzly bear, which is a large brown bear. They are considered more unpredictable and more likely to attack humans than black bears are.

We were tent camping. The campground had a bear trap, probably because they were having bear issues. That night, the family dog woke us up growling. We heard a bear grunting and knocking over garbage cans. The next morning he was in the trap, so we got a very close look at him. Unforgettable 😳

I think I have some pictures of crayfish I took a few years ago, but the only photos of bears I have are of grizzlies at a WA State research facility.

I had a couple of encounters with grizzly bears when growing up in Montana, once as a boy scout (long story) and once when camping with the family.

Most Oregon campgrounds have vault (or pit) toilets (drop down toilets?), but they're well maintained. Plenty of toilet paper and, yes, flies. Sometimes air fresheners. 😄

One place we camp at has heated bathrooms with electricity and flush toilets, but it gets very cold there at night.

Cabins are fun! We used to stay in cabins with wood stoves when I was a kid on occasion. Very cozy. These days, I just prefer to be outside around a campfire gazing at the stars.

Unfortunately, campfires were banned this week, but on the plus side we saw a lot of shooting stars! 💫

Yes! Yakisoba is a favorite of ours. It's not very difficult, and we like to keep it simple. 😁

Yachats, at the mouth of the Yachats River. We usually visit Yachats and Newport a couple times a year. Probably should try some new spots. The Seaside-Astoria area is nice, too.

omg, the SUPpers were thick! I didn't realize it was so popular, so now I want to try. Lost Lake is perfect for SUPping because motorized boats are not allowed.

Mt. Hood is not that easy. It would take most of a day, and spring climbing in the snow is safest. Too dangerous this time of year.

For cooking/drinking? Nooo. This campground is well-developed and has potable water, but I always bring several gallons of filtered water from home.

I've camped since I was a young boy and just love getting out in nature and sitting around the campfire. This time, campfires were not permitted but we had a great view of the Perseid meteor shower and could cool off in the lake during the day.

Yakisoba and oden are both easy to make in one pan or pot. We've also recently discovered Tiberino pasta and risotto that can be made in a pot/pan without having to drain water, and the quality is impressive.

No yabbies that I know of. There are some crayfish in streams (many more in the south), but nothing much to worry about in the lakes here.

Bears are more of a concern, so we have to store any food in the car overnight.

Thanks! Yes, we had a great time swimming in a lake during the day and looking for shooting stars at night (campfires were banned). We also avoided the worst heat wave of the year and wildfire smoke in the unhealthy range. Our timing could not have been better.

And yes, spill the gossip, please.
