This hard compact mass of natural sandstone was discovered in Fontainebleau, France. It is made of quartz sand.

Tiny crystals of quartz cemented together grains of loose sand, forming a pale beigeish-white, sinuous, rounded, twisted, scrolling formation reminiscent of a large piece of sculpture made of white marble. Sits on a brass pedestal.
Water and wind deposited quartz sand along an ocean beach about 35 million years ago, and other sediments buried the sand. Later, the overlying rock was eroded and the sand exposed. Within the past 400,000 years, circulating groundwater dissolved quartz from some areas of the exposed sand and redeposited it in others.
