It doesn't take a lot to get a 15% tip from me.

Just give me decent
o taste
o presentation
o service
o value
o cleanliness

BUT, if your payment machine has a minimum suggested tip of more than 15%, then I am always going to select "other" and manually enter a tip of zero.

I’m confused. You received (presumably) good service but you’re giving zero tip because 15% is suggested?
Or are you saying there was 15% tip already included in the bill and you’re adding zero on top of that?

It's not cool that you're willing to penalize your server for company policies.

Wow. The way this is so wrongheaded, and yet you state it so loudly and proudly.

Maybe reconsider your "standard" tip that is actually below the norm, and that your qualifiers for that tip are almost entirely out of your server's control.

The stance “if you can’t tip 20% don’t go out to eat” seems wrongheaded. If restaurants feel that strongly they can add a required gratuity. Many places do this for large parties. Tipping is classist; mandatory gratuity would at least take customers out of the fight between workers and owners.

Mandatory gratuity would have many customers headed towards the drive thru.

In States where restaurants are exempt from even the Fed min wage and want customers to pay their employees wages, I'll tip 20% for adequate service.
In States like mine where restaurants are required by State law (California min wage laws) to pay minimum wage, I tip 15% for adequate service.

If you wanted to provoke responses, well done. If you wanted to find your stingy tribe, you came to the wrong place.

Consider opening your heart to the responses you’ve received. Living with a generous spirit is so freeing.

This is seriously messed up… you need to rethink your entire perspective on this, because you’re not punishing the business… you’re just making life more difficult for the person who served you. If you’re giving to stiff your server, just stay the fuck home and cook. WHY do you think this okay?! 🤬

No tip? Because you’re offended at checkout defaults? It takes just as much effort to key in 15% or $ amount as it does to chose ZERO. For goodness sake, that is cruel.

I don't penalize the server if I don't like the taste of the food or I think the food is overpriced.

Manually entering zero vs choosing to tip less than the suggested % is just vindictive bs. If it was a mandatory tip you might get more traction, but as many have pointed out, you’re penalizing actual people for a managerial or tech issue. Recommended means you get to choose. Zero is just poor form.

When I waited on tables in college 30 years ago my hourly wage was $2.13. Today the hourly wage in many states is still $2.13. Also, most of the time that was taxed out so my pacheck was literally made out for $0.00. Don't take it out on the servers if management is greedy and won't pay them.

If the tipping requirement is a place for you to draw the line, boycott the establishment and tell them why. Take a stand for livable wages for waitstaff. Don't punish workers because the owner is using customers to subsidize wage expenses.

So you punish an employee for what the restaurant does? You know the owner of the restaurant doesn't care if you stiff your server, so I don't know what point you are going for

I tip 15 percent at a restaurant only when I’m traveling for business. I don’t need the admin in my ear when I submit my expense account.

I make damn sure to bring cash to total up to a 20 to 25 percent tip.

That would be fine if the employer was forced to pay the server. They don't. They never have.

And the standard tip for okay service is 20%. That's a starting point. For great service, I tip 30 because been there.

I am all for #NoTipping AND a living minimum wage. That's about $23/hour ish.

So let me get this straight...if you receive excellent service, but your bill recommends a 15% tip, you're not tipping at all? You're going to punish the server for something they have no control over?

That's cruel. I know it's not the same everywhere, but in the States servers rely on tips to get by. 20% is standard, BTW.

I work in the service industry. I am also IT for the service industry.

You are an a$$hole that has probably never worked in the service industry.

The employee working for tips has no choice about what’s printed on the receipt.

Just like they have no choice in the a$$hole they have as customers.
