Supposedly, there was a view of heaven held by medieval peasants where heaven meant copious food, ale, and crops always fully ripened. It's hard to know whether this is just a working class dream as such, or whether there is a link to pagan afterlives which tended to focus more on bodily conditions.

I think it's perfect.

Those who have the $399 they cost likely have too much fashion sense to wear them, and those who would like to wear them probably don't have the money.

Trump has found the ideal product for no market.

I mean, if a plan depends on a GOP House member to have guts*, I think we know what the outcome is going to be.

Also, much of the polling suggests Trump gets very little of the independent vote. With much of the Republican party opposed to him and little independent support, it seems pretty unlikely that the polls showing a Trump victory will be proven true.

I don't know that I agree that the media is as monolithic as all that. But to the extent that there is consistency, that can easily be explained by GOP antics driving ratings and established patterns of thinking (e.g., Dems=bad for the economy). There's no need for a conspiracy to get this outcome.

I don't even think it's that sinister. I think GOP antics are just better for ratings than Dem governance.

Certainly some networks (e.g., Fox) just outright lie, but I think for the most part news is controlled by the profit motive.

One major reason polls show Trump winning is pollsters still rely on randomly calling people, and older people (typically more conservative) are more likely to answer a phone call from a number they don't know than younger people are. Therefore, the demographics for the polls are skewed right.

And the only ones who win are the arms dealers.

A minor quibble: Money working because we all believe it is commodity fetishism, not the social contract.

The social contract is the belief that we should all give up some of our absolute freedom in exchange for the protection of a society governed by rules. One can have a society without money.

Thanks for clarifying.

As an American, I definitely understand how annoying it is when people pretend your country is perfect in ways it demonstrably isn't.

My only worry is that some people will seize on any critique of universal healthcare/M4A/whatever as evidence that we shouldn't shoot for it.

Could you give a comparative estimate of how likely it is to go bankrupt do to medical bills in Canada vs. the US? Maybe how many people per capita experience bankruptcy due to medical costs?

That's probably a clearer way of putting things than I have it. Yeah, I won't penalize someone for using ChatGPT as such, but if the structure isn't right, if there are errors of fact, etc. then I dock that. Penn State has policies that I have to go through for plagiarism if that's an issue.

I'm not sure I see that as contradictory, so much as real world writing advice for professional writers. If I'm in a business setting, using ChatGPT only bites me if I get caught using it and there are negative consequences. If I use it and no one ever notices, then I've got another tool to help.

I like the Indigenous/Settler reading quite a bit, that's really insightful. Deen talks about the genesis of the play as the urban/rural divide, so that's partly where that argument comes from. Deen specifies each woman should be a different ethnicity, so you couldn't cast 3 Indigenous actors.

Certainly the way I map these 3 political positions is simplified and broad-brush-stroke, but I don't agree that makes them wrong. They lack nuance, but as I see these 3 positions, I've explained their basic general attitudes toward social change reasonably well.

That being said, I believe Deen is a US playwright (though I don't know is he was born in another country), so I don't think that seeing a US political allegory here is unrealistic or unjustified.

I definitely appreciate your critiques. Sometimes I do draw Western parallels for non-Western texts, with the goal being that my audience (whom I assume is largely Western) has a frame of reference. And yes, I'm aware that there are issues with this approach.
