People talk about how Republicans were duped by Trump on everything from the supposed threat of immigrants to the "stolen" election. I argue that they're not really suckers – they know those things are false & just don't care because a reign of fascism, racism, & bigotry is exactly what they want.

Agree 💯 Perhaps a small number of them may have been bamboozled but most of them are true believers and have been for awhile, but kept it subtle (using code words to disguise). What TFG did was to make it mainstream/acceptable, so they felt they could do it out in the open.

You bet. They’ve always known what they were doing. I do believe as well that there are some who let things go so far that are now imbedded so deep there isn’t a path back. Screw em.

I’ve seen this in my own circle when I’m shocked that people I grew up with proclaim their devotion to Trump and now proudly see their racism/homophobia/misogyny as being somehow Patriotic.
I realize now this is who they were all along. They’re merely more comfortable saying it out loud.

Eyes wide open. Blinders off. The "duped" were/are willing participants in the saga of "As white supremacy Turns". No sympathy for the devil.

The Paranoid Style in Politics (1964) describes the predecessors of Trump’s supporters. While the paranoid style has been around for quite a while, it’s never dominated a political party or had social media to fuel its conspiracies the way it does now.
US democracy is in uncharted waters!

An interesting and insightful analysis. Such a shame the author completely botched his conclusion.

Nothing pisses me off more than the "benefit of the doubt" & kid gloves these grown ass folks are treated with by the media, politicians & dangerously naive fellow Americans. If they wanted 2 believe facts or find them, every tool 2 educate themselves is available. White supremacy is a helluva drug.

It's the ultimate symptom of white supremacy: no matter what they do, how horrible and cruel they are, they always deserve respect.

I tell my husband all the time. 45's die-hard followers will never give him up because he hates the same people they do. Thing is, they don't realize that he hates them too. His only loves are himself and $$$.

Agree. Exhausted & over the nonsense that folks were duped. I don’t dispute the intended effects of propaganda, disinfo, or straight up Psy-Ops. But, everyone has an obligation to do their due diligence to decipher it. So sick of infantilizing these folks anxieties & fears re: loss of privilege.

So many people now have been intentionally raised *TO* accept the stories handed to them by authority figures without pushback or even critical consideration…

From infancy — “blanket training”… which is an extra layer. White Patriarchy (veiled as religion) is functioning simultaneously as the carr

The GOP’s willingness to endorse falsehoods predates trump by decades. The only thing that changed is how far they were willing to go with it. Became much more akin to Orwell’s 1984 “two plus two equals five…”

When it comes to Trmp, I do believe many people have blurred the line between policies and identity. They see him as an extension of their identity. For them to jettison him and everything he represents would be like them cutting off a limb.

tRump went full steam into a personality cult leader persona just like the many dictators of history (Kim Jong, Hitler, Mussolini, etc) he knew exactly what he was doing because he craves attention as a malignant narcissist.
