From Deborah's POV, closure produces a mixed result. Yes, Deborah finds out what happened to her mama and her big sister. She is able to make peace with that. However, the profiting off the HeLa cells never is really reconciled in her lifetime. That was hard for me to accept. #SBBC #ImmortalLife

Anyone participating in a medical study or experiment deserves to know in full what will happen to them and their information. The lax standards of the past allowed personal information about Henrietta to become public and that information adversely affected her family.

I would just like to clarify that "doctors/researchers" do not make huge or even moderate sums of money from research. The universities and drug companies make the money. That said, until this book I never knew the most common cell line used in medical research was stolen and uncompensated.

The author did a good job of showing the contrast between researchers, doctors, and patients who benefited from the research and the Lacks family who never benefited at all.

Deborah carried the weight of her entire family on her shoulders. And the weight of "them cells" It affected her emotionally and physically (as generational trauma does) But this was deeper than generational trauma. It was the weight of the entire history of Black people and the medical field. #SBBC

Henrietta is and should be considered a hero. Her cells “HeLa” being taken / stolen from her and used making others rich when she and her family didn’t benefit from it. Henrietta Lacks is a hero her life and ultimately her cells changed medicine!!!

#SBBC #FireNextTime The brutality lives and breathes in my profession, nursing. POC are ignored, undertreated, and gaslighted with every healthcare encounter. My colleagues are called the N-word, or worse, and subjected to microaggressions. It’s a microcosm.
