What happened to Elsie was upsetting. To know that she was mistreated & experimented on without consent was terrible. Now I've read more about Crownsville today, and it upset me even more to realize that patients were used as forced labor to build the hospital & work the farm.

I read this book years ago, and just read it for a 2nd time for #SBBC . I missed seeing this news last year that the family had a settlement with one company in August 2023.

Deborah carried the weight of her entire family on her shoulders. And the weight of "them cells" It affected her emotionally and physically (as generational trauma does) But this was deeper than generational trauma. It was the weight of the entire history of Black people and the medical field. #SBBC

Henrietta is and should be considered a hero. Her cells “HeLa” being taken / stolen from her and used making others rich when she and her family didn’t benefit from it. Henrietta Lacks is a hero her life and ultimately her cells changed medicine!!!
