Carson Gibbs @EconomistCarsonToday the Supreme Court is hearing a case on whether or not homeless people can be punished for sleeping outside when there's no shelter space available02:42 PM - Apr 22, 2024
This is the biggest case on the issue of homelessness in decades and could de facto criminalize being homeless
Extra important to remember today:

Bikes are now made of a lot of different materials these days but there's a saying that still holds true. "Steel is real".
This is my friend Nate Zukas posing with my new #steel framed Zukas gravel bike back in 2013. He builds them in a couple small sheds in his backyard.

There's a push for the 15 Minute City in the UK with the idea that every basic you could possibly need should be within 15 minutes to reduce driving, emissions, & build a sense of community, but of course the Tories are using misinformation to persuade voters why it would be bad. 🙄

It was great! Guess it was the same strategy as companies like Walmart & Amazon – price so low they drive all the small retailers out of business, make money by selling shares (but not off their goods & services), and finally, with shareholders wanting an actual profit, jack up prices.

Note to owners of big or small businesses:
The money generated by the business doesn't come out of thin air. It is made possible by two groups of people: (1) the workers making the product or delivering the service and (2) the customers or clients paying for them.
Don't ever alienate either group.

Still a lot of drivers, but there are good options available.

Carson Gibbs @EconomistCarsonWhat if you could walk from your home, order a coffee, and greet the neighbor that runs the place rather than driving your car to a Starbucks on a busy, sterilized stroad and ordering an overpriced drink from a soulless corporation?11:20 AM - Mar 31, 2024
Unfortunately, this is most likely illegal to build in your town.

Carson Gibbs @EconomistCarsonThe French government is currently in the process of drafting legislation to help cities across the country transition away from what they call "ugly France".03:47 PM - Mar 28, 2024
A big part of that transition involves re-purposing the excessive parking lots dotting most suburban areas.

We have one of the safest bike-2-school routes in the USA. Wide sidewalks, 25 mph limits as far as you can see. And yet once a week, I see a Tesla pull out in front of a middle schooler on a bike. Always a Tesla.
Bruno and Augie’s Dad @SteveODBruno, Augie, and I almost got hit by a car backing into his driveway during our “right before bedtime” walk. Of course it was a Tesla. Inattentive driver in a residential area, not looking where he’s going cuz he assumes tech will save him. It’s always a Tesla.11:10 PM - Mar 16, 2024

Eliminating parking minimums: what? What does parking have to do with housing? Turns out, pretty fair amount. In most codes it’s required when a developer builds they have to set aside a certain amount of the land for parking. In some areas this exceeds the required green space area on a lot.

Thats why much of this country we see so much cement yet so few walkers/bikers. (But don’t let me get off topic). Because of parking minimums, land that could have been used for more units, goes to parking, or it drives up the price of units making the margins on affordable all the harder to hit.

It's the primary reason the housing prices in my neighborhood have skyrocketed, proportionate to all other areas. Oh, plus walking access to Lake Erie & Edgewater Park. It just rocks. I'm so grateful to have my house from "the before times" when it was considered edgy.

Living in a walking neighborhood is awesome, too, even if you don't have a job. I love having 15 decent restaurants, cafes, & bars & 5 theater spaces within a 4 block walk. It beats the heck out of any suburb I've ever seen.
