My son, Nicholas, is special. He was born special, through a very difficult pregnancy. There are people who would argue that the term “special” is misleading or inaccurate, but I will cling to my heart’s knowledge as his mother, that he is special, and apart from other sons.

On Spoutible, I regularly spout positive, sensitive, and thoughtful stuff. You'll be shocked to know that, a long time ago, I used to be a bitter cynic, highly critical of people to the point of misery.

How is it that I could do such a major 180? Well, let me tell you that story.

White America claims to be outraged in the moment, they claim that they are being oppressed and replaced... As with so many things white America fails to recognize its own feelings and the reasons behind them.

There once was a boy. He was a bit of a brat, but generally good hearted. He had a stuffed tiger. It was smart, brave and loyal. However, the real big deal about these two is that when no one was looking the stuffed tiger became a real live tiger. Then one day, it all stopped.

ON LETTING GO

It's hard for many writers to let go of our literary babies. But not letting go will hinder our careers in traditional publishing. I've seen this first-hand in my role as a freelance editor.

Goodbye, Dad [1/11]
When I was little & storms rolled in, I'd run down the hall & tuck myself in with Mom & Dad. "Time to get some sleep," my dad would murmur, taking my small hand in his large, protecting palm. I felt safe then

But there was another kind of storm in my house...

Ben Clay could smell the stolen meatball sandwich in the to-go bag he’d ripped off from Jo’s Pizzeria even while he was running away from the cop. Bad luck that it was the cop’s lunch. The cop was overweight, though, and the park was just across the street. He could outrun him.

Flying

We had a wooden chest in the living room that seemed ten feet tall. After the harvest season, we filled the chest up to the top with freshly hulled rice and, sometimes, tiny white eyeless worms would crawl out from the chest on to the floor during the night.

I wish schools taught this.

Memorial Day began in 1865 when 10,000 formerly enslaved Black people & a few white missionaries honored fallen Union soldiers.

It was founded in memory of those who gave their life to end white supremacy terror, slavery, & human trafficking.

It seems impossible, but in my lifetime I have likely listened to hundreds of thousands of songs. Most have simply drifted in and out of consciousness. Many have taken refuge in my head. And a tiny few have imprinted themselves on my psyche. This thread is about one of those few.
